When you get a bunch of former Queensland stars on the golf course with sponsors members of the public and it is a recipe for fun, reminiscing and great times.

That was certainly the case at the FOGS Inaugural Charity Golf Day which was held on August 22 2025 at Virginia Golf Club with a sold-out field of 120, which included 30 teams of four.

Lewis said it was “a thrill” to be part of the event. “It is always a good golf day when you have the opportunity to play with old teammates, sponsors and supporters,” Lewis said.

“It is great for all of us to get our minds off work for the day, have good conversations about footy and do our bit for charity.”

The former Maroons and competitors shared breakfast, lunch and drinks while prizes were awarded at the end of proceedings. A silent auction featuring exclusive rugby league memorabilia was also held.

Lewis plays off a handicap of around 15. He said Rogers “hits them really well” but was not so effusive in his praise about Gillmeister’s talents.

“Gilly can’t play,” Lewis grinned. “He’s as handy as an ashtray on a motorbike.

“I am a leftie in golf. I am right-handed and right-footed in everything else but play golf left-handed and I don’t know why.

“My mother was left-handed in her sporting career of tennis and netball. Dad was always a right-hander and right-footer.

“Golf is one activity that is a favourite for a lot of the guys and a pressure release. Of course we would often give each other a bagging … and we still do.

“I think people in professional sport have always liked an opportunity to get away from the game that they play, or have played, for a living.”

Lewis enjoyed an activity on one of the holes where players were spun around and around before having to hit their tee shot in a dizzy state. He did fairly well after Gillmeister insisted he was spun six times, to match his famous No.6 jersey.
