Expo success continues in Mt.Isa

The 2011 FOGS Indigenous Employment and Careers Expo series continued in style in Mount Isa last week.

Exactly one week from the start of the 2011 State of Origin series, the Former Origin Greats’ visit last Wednesday could not have been better timed.

Over 1,000 people, including school leavers, job seekers and those interested in a fresh start, streamed through the entrance during the day. Hundreds of applications were lodged for available employment and training positions.

Among the highlights of the event was the attendance of recently retired NRL star Steve Price and the Cowboys’ currently injured Brent Tate, who both were yet to attend an Expo in Mount Isa. Origin fans, young and old, were thrilled with the opportunity to chat to these players who have been integral to the Maroons’ success in recent years.

Of course, the try-a-trade displays again proved a big hit and provided visitors with some ‘hands-on’ experience to take home with them at the end of the day in addition to thorough information packages and strategic advice. Activities set-up were relevant to the hospitality, automotive, metal fabrication, horticulture, carpentry, refrigeration and electrical industries.

A host of Former Origin Greats together with Price and Tate, including Gene Miles, Allan Langer, Gary Belcher, Sam Backo and Colin Scott, made sure Expo visitors were kept entertained and inspired throughout the day.

The 2011 Expo series will next move to Townsville and be held at the Townsville Entertainment and Convention Centre on July 27.
