Thousands of Indigenous Job Seekers Attend Brisbane FOGS Expo

The largest FOGS Indigenous Employment and Careers Expo to date was held at Suncorp Stadium on the second Wednesday in September.


Over 3,500 Indigenous job seekers and school leavers flocked to the event which featured special appearances by a host of FOGS and Brisbane Broncos players in addition to employment, education and training opportunities in a full range of industries and a comprehensive Worldskills Try’a Trade section.


Broncos Israel Folau, Ben Te’o, Jharal Yow Yeh, Antonio Winterstein, Peter Wallace, Andrew McCullough, Ben Hunt and Corey Norman joined the line-up of FOGS supporting Brisbane’s Indigenous community at the expo.


The FOGS onboard at the expo, which was held inside the Suncorp Stadium seating bowl for the first time, included ‘The King’ Wally Lewis together with Steve Walters, Gene Miles, Michael Devere, Chris Close, Michael Hancock, Ben Ikin, Gary Belcher, Arthur Beetson, Sam Backo and Kerrod Walters.


Over 1000 employment and training opportunities were on offer at the expo with a capacity number of Queensland’s most prominent employment, education and training providers including Construction Skills Queensland, Australia Post, Greyhound Australia, Thiess, Accor Hospitality, Virgin Blue, Tourism Queensland, National Australia Bank, Woolworths, Energex, Griffith University, the Australian Catholic University, Apprenticeships Queensland and TAFE Queensland.


As well as the plethora of employment positions on offer, the Worldskills Try’a Trade section was embraced by visitors who engaged with FOGS to try the skills required in the construction, electrical, hair and beauty and hospitality industries through activities such as making a picture frame, building a brick wall, creating an electrical circuit and icing a cake.


Thus far the 2010 FOGS Indigenous Employment and Careers Expo has been held on the Gold Coast and in Cairns, Rockhampton, Mount Isa, Mackay and Brisbane with a collective attendance of close to 10,000 Indigenous Queenslanders. The expo will next be held in Townsville on Wednesday 6 October.
