Juatia Cora continued a recent lucky streak whilst at the Former Origin Greats (FOGS) Indigenous Employment and Careers Expo in Brisbane last week.
After finding $10 on the footpath and winning a signed Broncos football earlier this month, the Runcorn State High Year 11 student scooped up the major prize at the expo: a computer package worth $1,000.
“I’m stoked. It’s such a wonderful prize,” Juatia said.
Proudly donated by Officeworks, the laptop, printer, portable hard drive, Microsoft Office and virus protection pack will be very useful for Juatia’s assignments and future job-seeking.
Juatia is completing a school based traineeship with a leading financial institution and is considering further study or following in her mum Clarinna’s footsteps, who currently works in the cultural heritage field. The FOGS expo gave her the chance to explore some of the many career opportunities available to her.
“I really liked the community services exhibit because I like working with people. The expo was really good. I didn’t know what to expect but it was actually really cool,” she said.
Expo attendees could enter the prize draw after visiting 15 exhibitors and completing a survey run by DEEWR that measured the expo’s effectiveness as an aspiration building event.
“The chance to win such a great package is an excellent incentive for students to interact with the expo exhibitors”, said FOGS Executive Chairman Gene Miles.
Officeworks Upper Mt Gravatt team member Scott Williams said that donating the computer package as the grand prize for the survey was a “fantastic opportunity” to support Queensland’s youth.
“Helping young Indigenous Australians into the workforce is something that Officeworks and our parent company Wesfarmers are keen to support,” Mr Williams said.
“We’re grateful to FOGS for allowing us the opportunity to show our support for their programs and activities in this way” Mr Williams continued. “We hope Juatia gets a lot of use and enjoyment out of her prize and that everyone who attended the expo found it informative and inspiring.”
Gene Miles was on hand to present Juatia with her prize, and thanked Officeworks for their support of the FOGS’ work.
“We are so pleased that Officeworks have made such a generous donation to support the message of Learn Earn Legend! to young indigenous Australians – it’s a great fit with our program. All the products in the prize pack will play an important role in Juatia’s future study and career aspirations,” Gene said.
