Three Former Origin Greats were deservedly inducted into the North Queensland Sports Hall of Fame over the weekend. Gene Miles (FOG #28), Gorden Tallis (FOG #82) and Sam Thaiday (FOG #157) were recognised as some of North Queensland’s greatest sportspeople in a ceremony at the Townsville Country Bank Stadium.

"It was an honour to be inducted with the great Vern Daisy. As a youngster I admired the way he played in the game in NQ. Tough with great ball skills and his team mates all loved playing with him, not so much the opposition.

"I’ve got so many great memories from growing up and playing footy in North Queensland - it’s where it all started for me. The people, the clubs, the volunteers - they make the game what it is.

Sammy Thaiday added "What a fantastic honour this was to be included with such iconic North Queenslanders. Growing up and learning my rugby league trade in Townsville really set me up for the rugby league career that I had.

A wider group of eight inductees were awarded on the night, including Mitchell Johnson, Natalie Cook, Jim Patterson, Glen Buchanan and Vern Daisy. Previous inductees include Pat Rafter, Cathy Freeman and Karrie Webb.

Following the Hall of Fame ceremony on Friday night, the North QLD Sportstar Awards ceremony took place on Saturday, recognising North QLD’s best and brightest in 2025, across categories such as Junior Sportsperson, Para-Athletes, Teams, and Sports Impact.
