The first of six 2009 FOGS Indigenous Employment and Careers Expos was held at the Townsville Entertainment and Convention Centre on Wednesday, 29 April, with great success.

Thousands of Indigenous Job Seekers Flock to Townsville Expo

Mal Meninga in interviewed by Townsville media as the crowds swell in the first hours of the expo.

An estimated 2,500 Indigenous job seekers attended the expo to connect directly with 40 of Queensland's most prominent employment, education and training providers, from a wide range of industries.

As well as being treated to an appearance by Jonathan Thurston, the Townsville community enjoyed special appearances by Queensland "Team of the Century" members Mal Meninga, Gene Miles, Allan Langer and Arthur Beetson, who were joined by fellow Origin legends Michael Hancock, Sam Backo and Greg Conescu.

FOGS Executive Chairman Gene Miles said the success of the first 2009 FOGS Indigenous Employment and Careers Expo in Townsville is very encouraging.

"The success of the Townsville expo provides a positive indication for the remaining expos to be held this year in Rockhampton, Cairns, Mackay, Mount Isa and Brisbane," Mr Miles said.

"FOGS are committed to the narrowing the employment and training gap between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians and it is excellent that this initiative has received such a warm response so far.

"We are looking forward to hearing about positive employment outcomes from exhibitors and job seekers who attended the Townsville expo," concluded Mr Miles.

FOGS would like to thank the Australian Government, who is providing funding the six expos, together with principal sponsor Construction Skills Queensland and Gold Sponsor Australia Post.  FOGS would like to extend gratitude to all Townsville exhibitors who were central to the expo's success, and to Townsville print, television and radio media for their assistance with promotion.
