Indigenous Job Seekers Embrace Opportunity at Rockhampton Expo
The second of six 2009 FOGS Indigenous Employment and Careers Expos was held at the Rockhampton Showgrounds on Wednesday, 10 June, with great success.
The second of six 2009 FOGS Indigenous Employment and Careers Expos was held at the Rockhampton Showgrounds on Wednesday, 10 June, with great success.
An estimated 900 Indigenous job seekers attended the expo to connect directly with 40 of Queensland's most prominent employment, education and training providers, from a wide range of industries.
In addition to perusing exhibitor displays, job seekers were provided with the opportunity to attend information sessions conducted by Construction Skills Queensland, Defence Force Recruiting and Pass Australia for further insight to the opportunities available.
The Rockhampton community was also treated to an appearance by Queensland "Team of the Century" player Arthur Beetson, who was joined by fellow former Origin legends Greg Conescu, Sam Backo, Alan McIndoe, Chris Close and Matt Sing.
FOGS hopes State of Origin coach Mal Meninga, State of Origin assistant coach Allan Langer and Origin legend Jason Hetherington are able to attend one or more of the remaining expos, after they were unable to attend the Rockhampton expo because of the Swine Flu alert in the Queensland Origin camp.
FOGS Executive Chairman Gene Miles said the success of the second 2009 FOGS Indigenous Employment and Careers Expo in Rockhampton indicates the opportunities provided by the expos are of widespread interest to Indigenous job seekers in Queensland.
"The success of Rockhampton expo provides a positive indication of Indigenous job seekers' interest in attending the remaining expos to be held this year in Cairns, Mackay, Mount Isa and Brisbane," Mr Miles said.
"FOGS are committed to the narrowing the employment and training gap between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians and it is excellent that this initiative has received such a warm response so far.
"We are looking forward to hearing about positive employment outcomes from exhibitors and job seekers who attended the Rockhampton expo," concluded Mr Miles.
FOGS thanks the Australian Government, who is providing funding the six expos, together with principal sponsor Construction Skills Queensland and Gold Sponsor Australia Post. FOGS also extends gratitude to all Rockhampton exhibitors who were central to the expo's success, and to Rockhampton print, television and radio media for their assistance with promotion.
The next FOGS Indigenous Employment and Careers Expo will be held in Cairns on 29 July, 2009 at the Cairns Convention Centre.
Applications to exhibit at expos in Cairns, Mackay, Mount Isa and Brisbane remain open, however as space is strictly limited it is recommended you click here to secure this opportunity.
